While many regions are still searching for a formula for sustainable development, the municipality of Han Pijesak and the city of Loznica have already started implementing it \u2013 with the support of the European Union. The project \u201cDeveloping Rural Tourism as a Foundation for Future Sustainable Development of the Cross-border Area of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina\u201d demonstrates how cooperation between local communities, hunting associations, and tourism stakeholders can lead to tangible changes on the ground. After just one year of implementation, the effects are already visible and the outlook is promising.<\/p>\n
In both Loznica and Han Pijesak, hunting lodges have been renovated and equipped, upgrading the infrastructure that now serves not only hunters but also plays a role in broader tourism development. In Tr\u0161i\u0107, a new facility is ready to host the Cross-Border Rural Tourism Promotion Centre \u2013 a place where nature, heritage, and modern development models meet. By the end of summer, new wildlife observation points will be installed across various locations, and two off-road vehicles will be procured, further strengthening the capacities of local organizations engaged in tourism planning and management.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the Hunting Association \u201cGu\u010devo\u201d emphasise that the project enabled them to transform their role \u2013 from guardians of nature to active tourism partners. Thanks to EU funding, their facility was adapted and equipped, and their presence in the community gained new significance.<\/p>\n
Four thematic workshops were organized where participants from Han Pijesak and Loznica, supported by facilitators, mapped regional resources and developed ideas for new tourism products. Local tourism organizations were actively involved, and a cross-border tourism guide is currently in preparation. In addition, two key documents have been created: a Cross-Border Study on Rural Development and Environmental Protection, and the first-ever Tourism Development Strategy for the municipality of Han Pijesak.<\/p>\n
One of the unique aspects of this project is its integration of digital tools. Digital maps are being developed to showcase hiking and cycling trails, cultural landmarks, restaurants, and hospitality services. A multifunctional mobile application is also underway \u2013 to help tourists navigate the area, access information, and even track wildlife movements.<\/p>\n
Representatives from Han Pijesak note that, although complex, this project has been a valuable opportunity to connect cross-border actors and lay the foundation for future collaboration. In the past five years, tourism has become one of the municipality\u2019s key priorities, and this project has further strengthened institutional and human capacities. The experience gained will serve as a base for future initiatives and deeper regional cooperation.<\/p>\n
The total value of the project is \u20ac339,971.00, implemented from 15 September 2023 to 14 September 2025. However, stakeholders agree that its impact will extend far beyond \u2013 through improved infrastructure, innovative tourism offers, and strengthened cross-border partnerships.<\/p>\n
